When we engage in a drawing practice, we are intentionally training our mind. The act of drawing and alert observation changes our consciousness as we lean into the act of creating. How we develop our practice is not determined by our actions alone. It is also governed by our mindset, our state of being, and by the quality of our attitude towards the act of drawing. The substance of our determined approach is the source of all our actions and behaviors.
As the viewer we are invited to engage in the act of observing what is there to be seen in a drawing, a process that calls us to translate what we see and to search for meaning. As with all forms of visual art and design, drawings are often like mirrors that teach us something about ourselves, our environment, or our culture. My drawings are reflections on physical objects that are created both by humans and the natural world. I focus on the subjects’ unique characteristics–their form and beauty. They are contemplations on how we as humans reveal ourselves through the objects we create and possess, as well as our relationship to the natural environment.

Merz-Ball visualizes a gluttonous condition brought about by 21st century consumer excess. It balances colorful beauty with a jagged chaotic aesthetic. Viewers experience a mixed sense of joy, wonder, curiosity and concern. Matt Lynch and Chris Vorhees have been creating site-specific experiential artworks that are at once humorous and critical since 1998. By using every day and iconic forms as a starting point, they are able to engage a wide audience. They have a large array of technical experience in fabrication as well as with managing subcontractors and specialists. They approach projects with an innate sense of efficiency and an interest in sustainability. Having gained international recognition by producing major sculptural interventions in prestigious venues in tight timeframes, the team is able to work on site with their own infrastructure using strategic pre-planning. Their “post-studio practice” includes extensive design and intense on-site construction, working long days with specifically experienced collaborators.
Merz-Ball will be created specifically for the Atlanta Beltline project from collected castoffs. Merz is a nonsense word invented by the German dada artist Kurt Schwitters to describe his collage and assemblage works based on scavenged scrap materials. The artists will use their interpretive structural engineering skills to convey a sense of theatrical spontaneity through strategic and experimental building processes. Artistic influences include Nancy Rubins’ installations comprised of sporting goods, appliances and other contemporary mass-produced objects. The work will synthesize a variety of popular imagery from hoarding and recycling to the 2004 video game Katamari Damacy and the accumulation-themed 1979 Star Trek movie. Merz-Ball will inspire a reflection on our individual and collective roles in the problems brought about by our participation in consumer culture. It acts as a warning as well as a pause to consider the side-effects of contemporary human-centric life.

The Next One is a continuing exploration into alternatives to typical task seating. Leveraging the research of Galen Cranz and the designs of chair makers such as Peter Galbert, Curtis Buchanan, and George Sawyer, The Next One continues to explore seating as a means for support but also and most importantly, engagement.
Starting with creating a replica of George Sawyer’s version of Cranz, Galbert, and Buchanan’s Perch and evolving through a series of continued iterations and explorations around these different takes on task seating, The Next One is a never ending quest to discover how we should be sitting…or if we should be at all.

The ghosts of the six Burghers and Mayor are now liberated from King Edward III demanding for surrender in 1346 to spare Calais. Reinterpreting Rodin’s self-sacrificing casts from 1895, now with the ghost light in neon; the Burghers have finally been freed from their imprisonment.

This work is part of a broader inquiry into new approaches to structural packaging design based in “selective rigidity”. Packaging design with selective rigidity generally behaves in a calculated way to support a given experience by being easy to open or manipulate in one area while rigid and tough in another. As the complex relationship between the materiality and means of manufacture and the realities of visually and tactilely perceived affordance evolve, I believe that this is an area ripe for further exploration.
This work is a “sketch” in 3D printed PLA and shrink wrap that begins to envision how a shift to rigid structure (bones) and ultra-thin wall sheathing (skin) could open up new opportunities for how a product package is made, how it looks, and how it performs – with an ultimate goal of uncovering opportunities for effective packaging through more sustainably responsible solutions.
As this work advances, I intend to continue exploring in ways that leverage current, near future, and far-out manufacturing methods and materials.
